Peter Nykoluk died on October 12th, 1990 as he came to the aid of his teammates who were involved in an accident that occurred when the University of Manitoba Crew was travelling to a regatta in Minneapolis, Minnesota. A financial award in memory of Peter Nykoluk was established to recognize individuals who are striving for excellence in rowing and whose outstanding contribution to the sport of rowing closely parallel the values of determination, commitment and sportsmanship consistently displayed by Peter. The purpose of the Scholarship is to financially assist athletes to pursue their educational goals while they continue to participate in the sport of rowing.
The Scholarship in the amount of $5,400.00 is administered through the University of Manitoba and may be awarded to one or more successful recipients pursuing their university or college education in Manitoba.
The selection process for the recipient of the Peter Nykoluk Rowing Scholarship is two part; Application and Interview. The interview is held in early October and applicants are scored based on the following criteria: Contribution to the Sport and Club Participation (20%), Personal Qualities (30%) and Athletic Performance, Pursuit of Excellence as athlete/coach (50%).
